It looks like Jude Law’s unorthodox pope will visit the US in January.
Deadline reports that The Young Pope will premiere the first part of its 10-episode first season at 9 pm Sunday, January 15th. Part two will air the next night at the same time, with the rest of the episodes to air on following Sundays and Mondays.
The Young Pope, written and directed by Paolo Sorrentino, stars Jude Law as Lenny Belardo/Pius XIII, the first American pope in history. Law’s character does not have the typical temperament of a pope. He has a ruthlessness and ambition that makes him dangerous to some at the Vatican. Sorrentino has described Law’s Pius XIII as a person who “tries to walk the long path of human loneliness to find a God for mankind. And for himself.” The series will see Pius XIII come up against plenty of obstacles within the Vatican as he makes it his mission to lead the Catholic Church in his own way.
The series also stars Diane Keaton, Silvio Orlando, Scott Shepherd, Cécile de France, Javier Cámara, Ludivine Sagnier, Toni Bertorelli, and James Cromwell.
The series, which is a joint production between HBO, Sky, and Canal+, was just recently picked up for a second season before its first has even aired. The series just premiered its first episode in Europe last week.
