HBO announced a new original series celebrating the magic within Latinx romance. The series, titled Like Water For Chocolate, will stream globally on Max and premiere on Sunday, November 3, in the U.S. through HBO Latino. The trailer is available to watch below.
According to the series’ press release, the show “explores the idea that sometimes traditions can become prison, an obstacle for love. Tita de la Garza and Pedro Múzquiz are two souls deeply in love, yet unable to be together due to entrenched family customs. The protagonists navigate a world of magical realism and rich flavors as Tita struggles between the destiny imposed on her by her family and her fight for love. Along the way, the audience will witness her greatest refuge: the kitchen. For Tita, her magical connection to cooking becomes an active resistance against oppression, allowing her to channel her deepest desires and passions into her recipes, transforming those who taste them.”
Additionally, Like Water For Chocolate takes place around the Mexican Revolution, a setting that contextualizes the show’s themes of women struggling to claim their own destinies via the press release. The series is adapted from the 1989 novel by Laura Esquivel (The Law of Love, Tita’s Diary) of the same name.
Starring as protagonist Tita is Azul Guaita (Rebelde, La Mujer del Diablo), and her lover Pedro will be played by Andrés Baida (Banditios, Who Killed Sara?), according to the Warner Bros. Discovery press release. In the role of Tita’s sister, Rosaura, is actress Ana Valeria Becerril (April’s Daughter, Las Bravas F.C.). Playing Gertrudis, the third sister of Tita and Rosaura, is Andrea Chaparro (Banditios, Rebelde). Mama Elena will be played by Irene Azuela (The Obscure Spring, The Envoys), Tita’s mentor, Nacha, will be played by Ángeles Cruz (Finlandia, Náufragos) and Juan Alejandrez will be portrayed by Louis David Horné (Yankee, Pact of Silence). Playing Don Felipe Múzquiz is Ari Brickman (All That Is Invisible, Sense8) and Don Pedro Múzquiz is actor Mauricio García Lozano (While The Wolf’s Away, Medea).
Like Water For Chocolate is scheduled to premiere this fall.
