HBO Releases First Look at ‘House of the Dragon’

The first official images from HBO’s House of the Dragon have arrived. In a WarnerMedia press release, HBO provides fans with the first look at a few of the main characters of the prequel series.

In the three photos, fans can spot Emma D’Arcy (Truth Seekers) and Matt Smith (Doctor Who) as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and her uncle, Prince Daemon Targaryen. The pair appear to be on a beach in the middle of a serious conversation.

Another photo shows Steve Toussaint (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time) as Lord Corlys Velaryon, otherwise known as “The Sea Snake”. Lord Corlys stands on a rocky coastline, looking wistfully into the distance.

Finally, the last photo in the press release shows Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One) as Alicent Hightower and Rhys Ifans (The Amazing Spider-Man) as her father, Otto Hightower, hand to king Viserys Targaryen the first. The only major character in House of Dragon excluded from the photographs is King Viserys, who will be played by Paddy Considine (Dead Man’s Shoes).

House of the Dragon is based on George R. R. Martin’s (author, A Song of Ice and Fire book series) book Fire & Blood, which details the foundation and lineage of the House of Targaryen. The series is set to take place 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

Ryan Condal (writer, Colony) and Miguel Sapochnik (director, Game of Thrones) are attached to the series as show runners, with the series being co-created by Condal and Martin. Condal has additionally written the pilot script of the series.

These photos from House of the Dragon come quickly after HBO’s announcement in late April that production on the series was underway. A photo of the cast in socially distanced table read was posted on the series’ Instagram page, along with the announcement that the series will begin streaming on HBO Max starting sometime in 2022.
