New information has recently been divulged about HBO Max’s new original Green Lantern series, according to Comicbook. The series will cover three different timelines of The Green Lantern Corps and series creators Greg Berlanti (Director, Love Simon) and Marc Guggenheim (Producer, Arrow) are at the helm of the production. Two character descriptions have been revealed for the show’s protagonists Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz, detailing the character’s backstories and how they struggle to adhere to society’s standards of a normal life.
Simon Baz’s description reads: “For as long as he can remember, Simon’s loved the Green Lanterns. Using his innate charm and gift of gab, he works in Detroit as a vendor. However, business hasn’t been good lately. In the wake of 9/11, America has grown distrustful of young Middle Eastern men,” as reported by Comicbook. Given this information fans can assume that one of the timelines the series will encompass is the early to mid 2000’s, after the attack on the World Trade Center in 2001. Baz was created in 2012 by Geoff Johns and Doug Mahnke, and his history in the comics originates when Hal Jordan and Sinestro fuse their power rings to make a third ring. This new ring flies away and searches for its new host, Simon Baz.
Jessica Cruz also received a description concerning her backstory and upbringing. Her character description for the new series reads: “She worked her way through school, while taking care of her younger sister. She’s bright. Determined. Looking at her you’d never know the struggle going on inside. Jessica lives with a sometimes- crippling anxiety disorder. She’s been fighting fear longer than any of our other Lanterns,” according to Comicbook.
Cruz was created in 2014 by Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver and her genesis takes place when an evil ring of power selects her. The power ring is known as The Ring of Volthoom and it acts as a parasite, draining the energy of the wielder and killing them from the inside. Fans will be interested to see what kind of approach HBO takes when constructing Cruz’s origin and if they implement the sinister Ring of Volthoom into her story.
Both lanterns actually have a history of working together, Cruz and Baz initially didn’t work well together. After Hal Jordan fuses their power batteries together and forces them to work as a team in a test of sorts, eventually they overcome their differences and pass the test.
Fans of Green Lantern comics will get to witness how HBO Max displays their relationship and what kind of twists and turns the series takes to develop their characters. Although the Green Lantern series doesn’t have a set release date yet, the show should be filming sometime soon. “Expect to learn more about Green Lantern on HBO Max in the coming weeks as WarnerMedia and DC Comics continue to prep for filming on the upcoming series,” as stated by Comicbook.
