HBO Max Relaunching ‘Adventure Time’ in the Form of Four Hour-Long Specials, Starting June 25th

HBO Max has announced that it is relaunching Adventure Time in the form of four hour-long specials, per Indie Wire. The first special, entitled “Adventure Time: Distant Lands – BMO,” will premiere on June 25th.

Adventure Time is an animated series that features twelve-year old Finn (voiced by Jeremy Shada) and his magical dog and best friend, Jake (voiced by John DiMaggio), as they travel the Land of Ooo and set about on countless adventures. It has two Primetime Emmy’s and was created by Pendleton Ward, an American animator also known for his new series co-created with Duncan TrussellThe Midnight Gospel, which premiered on Netflix in April 2020.

“Distant Lands – BMO” stars the fan-favorite character BMO, pronounced bee-moe (voiced by South Korean animator Niki Yang). On June 11th, 2020, HBO Max Family’s Youtube channel released a small introductory clip from the special called “Adventure Time: Distant Lands | BMO Intro” which shows BMO on a mission to Mars to start a new life as a potato farmer. It is unclear when in the Adventure Time universe this is occurring, because when we last saw BMO in the main series, he was King of Ooo, millennia after Finn and Jake’s time.

HBO Max’s official synopsis for the episode reads: “The first of these specials is BMO, which follows the lovable little robot on a new adventure. When there’s a deadly space emergency in the farthest reaches of the galaxy, there’s only one hero to call, and it’s probably not BMO. Except that this time it is!” (HBO Max). What this deadly space emergency is, no one knows, but it makes for an exciting teaser for the episode.

Adventure Time fandom feels about this as a whole due to the fact that Adventure Time has no official social media accounts and the comments for the video above are turned off. Additionally, HBO Max’s Instagram account only has one post advertising the specials, and the post has a meager 373 views and four comments.

Awareness of these specials are, as a result, fairly low, so it will be interesting to see reactions once “Distant Lands – BMO” premiers and fans finally find out about this under-hyped event.
