HBO Max Launching Two New AI Powered Features To Help Users Discover Content

HBO Max is deploying new technologies to improve the customer experience. HBO Max Studios will help consumers discover new content by showing vertical clips of series highlights.

The application will allow customers to easily flip back and forth between different types of media, including trailers and exclusive behind-the-scenes features. Feeds will be curated to viewers’ tastes, allowing them to discover series that will scratch that new-show itch.

HBO Max Studios will use an in-house AI tool to improve customer experiences. According to HBO Max, “human editors select and verticalize by using machine learning algorithms that utilize scene-level metadata to comb through thousands of hours of titles and suggest the most compelling, high-impact scenes for discovery.” Afterward, editors will add a human touch to select the clips that best capture user attention and interest. Eventually, HBO Max plans to expand into shorts similar to vertical dramas that have become popular on TikTok.

Deepna Devkar, SVP, Machine Learning Engineering, shared his excitement about the new platform. “We’re thrilled to launch this application of AI to accelerate the creation of these clips and look forward to quickly expanding to make even more of our amazing content offering discoverable through this new feature,” he said.

Another conversation-style application is now available to US Android users. The language model will allow users to discover content that not only suits their tastes but is also optimized for the situation at hand. Customers can find content for a mood, like ” comedy” or “dysfunctional family drama” or “best movie for a girls’ night in”.

Liesel Kipp, Executive Vice President, Product Management, Warner Bros. Discovery, also spoke on the new applications, “These new mobile features build on intuitive, familiar behaviors subscribers use every day. Both ‘HBO Max Shorts’ and ‘conversational search’ translate those behaviors into new ways to discover programming across the HBO Max service, making it easier and more seamless for subscribers to find something to watch,” she said.
