Recently HBO Max has declined to pick up another season of South Side, according to Comicbook. This is an on-going trend as the streaming platform has canceled many shows in the last few months following the new Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav’s vow to cut costs. Due to this, many shows that have been seen as unsuccessful were canceled and sadly for many fans, South Side was no exception.
A spokesperson at HBO Max wrote, “While HBO Max will not be moving forward with a fourth season of South Side, we are so proud of the rich world Bashir Salahuddin, Diallo Riddle and Sultan Salahuddin created. We thank them and Michael Blieden, Tony Hernandez, the supremely talented cast and crew and our partners at MTV Entertainment Studios. For three seasons, this beloved series balanced cutting, hyperlocal social commentary about life on the South Side of Chicago with silly, sometimes zany humor. The result was a wholly unique, ambitious, and fearless comedy that could speak to everyone living the American dream.”
According to Deadline, South Side originally debuted on Comedy Central with season one before making its way onto HBO Max and continuing with seasons two and three. The series follows two friends who graduated from community college and are ready to take on the world but they are currently stuck working at a Rent-TO-Own. The series is shot on location in the neighborhood of Englewood in Chicago, Illinois.
The cast of South Side includes Sultan Salahuddin (Black-ish), Kareme Young (South Side), Chandra Russel (Downtown Girl), Basit Salahuddin (Top Gun: Maverick), Quincy Young (Hack), Zuri Salahuddin (Sherman’s Showcase), Diallo Riddle (The Last O.G), Nefetari Spencer (This Is Us), and many others.
Season three of South Side debuted back in December. The current three seasons of the series can be streamed on HBO Max.
Diallo Riddle’s thoughts on cancelation below.
The show that never lost one fan. SOUTH SIDE means so much to us and the city of Chicago and to me personally. We’re shopping it around and with luck we will do more episodes, but until then, I want to thank the amazing cast, crew and fans of @southsidechi #SouthSide pic.twitter.com/YBvR9Q29RQ
