HBO Ends ‘The Time Traveler’s Wife’ After One Season

HBO’s time-traveling romantic drama series is ending after one season. Deadline reports Home Box Office has canceled Steven Moffat’s (Doctor Who, Sherlock) adaptation of The Time Traveler’s Wife. The series was based on the novel by Audrey Niffenegger (Raven Girl, Her Fearful Symmetry).

Premiering on June 19, the six-episode season starred Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones, Death on the Nile) and Theo James (Divergent, Sanditon) as a married couple whose love stretches across time as James’ Henry DeTamble is prone to involuntarily time travel, according to Deadline. Throughout the show, Leslie’s Clare Abshire reunites with Henry at different stages of both of their lives – from young children to older adults. The show also starred Desmin Borges (Utopia, DriverX) as Gomez, Natasha Lopez (Runner Runner, Law & Order: SVU) as Charisse, Kate Siegel (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass) as Annette, and several actors to portray Clare and James at different ages.

A spokeswoman issued a statement to Deadline regarding the end of the series.

“Though HBO will not be moving forward with a second season of The Time Traveler’s Wife, it was our privilege to partner with master storytellers Steven Moffat and David Nutter. We are so grateful for their passion, hard work and care for adapting this beloved book. We also thank Theo and Rose, and the rest of our brilliant cast for their heartfelt performances, which completely captivated audiences.”

This was not the novel’s first screen adaptation. A 2009 film saw Eric Bana (Troy, The Dry) and Rachel McAdams (The Notebook, About Time) tackle the roles of Henry and Leslie. The movie was directed by Robert Schwentke (Insurgent, The Captain).

According to Deadline, Moffat and series director David Nutter (Disturbing Behavior, Cease Fire) served as executive producers. They were joined by Sue Vertue (Mr. Bean, Coupling), Joseph E. Iberti (The Wizard of Lies, The School of Rock), and Brian Minchin (Torchwood, Dirk Gently) while Hartswood Films produced with Warner Bros. Television.

All six episodes of The Time Traveler’s Wife are available to stream on HBO Max.
