HBO Cancels Comedy Series ‘Minx’ in Light Of Cost-Cutting Moves

After only one season, HBO Max has canceled the popular show Minx, according to Deadline. The decision comes as production on the second season was nearing completion, despite the show’s positive reception. All ten episodes of season one will soon be removed from the platform.

Upon its release, the series received positive reviews from critics, with Season 1 holding a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Minx was renewed for a second season in May of this year.

The series is produced by Lionsgate Television and created and showrun by Ellen Rapoport (Desperados).

Lionsgate Television exclaimed that they “enjoyed a good partnership with HBO Max,” and even hinted that there may be hope for the show to continue in some form, stating that they “are working closely to find a new opportunity for Minx, so current, and new viewers, can continue this journey with [them],” via Deadline.

Minx is a television series set in 1970s Los Angeles starring Ophelia Lovibond (Elementary) and Jake Johnson (New Girl). Lovibond plays the role of Joyce, an young feminist who teams up with Doug, a successful publisher played by Johnson, to produce an erotic magazine for women.

Alongside Lovibond and Johnson, the series stars Idara Victor (Love is), Jessica Lowe (Wrecked), Lennon Parham (Bless this Mess), Michael Angarano (The Stanford Prison Experiment), and Oscar Montoya (Final Space).

Rapoport, who signed an overall deal with Lionsgate after the first season of Minx, executive produces along with Paul Feig (Ghostbusters), Dan Magnante (Spy), Ben Karlin (50/50), and pilot director Rachel Lee Goldenberg (Valley Girl). Johnson is a co-executive producer on the show.

Following its merger with Warner Bros. Discovery, the cable network has been undergoing cost-cutting measures. Among other cut programs are the original series Made for Love, the drama series Raised by Wolves, and comedy series Gordita Chronicles.

As of now, it remains unclear what the future holds for Minx and its loyal fans. Many are holding out hope that the show will be picked up by another network or streaming service, allowing them to see the story of Joyce and Doug to continue.
