The Emmy-winning television show Last Week Tonight With John Oliver is coming back to HBO for a fifth season. The show will return next month on February 18th on Sunday night. Viewers can watch the show at 11 pm ET or stream it right after the show airs at 12 am ET. The show itself has actually been renewed for another two seasons. This extends the show until 2020.
John Oliver covers the previous week’s political news, current events, as well as other broader issues by using satirical humor. He uses humor to not only engage his audience, but to also critique what happened in the previous week. He is the only news-orientated comedy show to air on Sunday nights. The show itself is recorded only a few hours before it airs on HBO.
Last Week Tonight With John Oliver has won eight Emmys since 2015, which include: Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series (2016 and 2017), Outstanding Interactive Program (2015 and 2017), Outstanding Variety Talk Series (2016 and 2017), and Outstanding Picture Editing for Variety Programming (2016 and 2017). The show has also won Peabody Award and the Writers Guild Award in the category of Comedy/Variety.
Avalon Television and Sixteen String Jack Productions produce Last Week Tonight With John Oliver for HBO. The executive producers for the show are: John Oliver (who is also the host), Tim Carvell, Liz Stanton, Jon Thoday, and James Taylor. The director for the show is Paul Pennolino.
The show is also available on HBO NOW, HBO GO, HBO On Demand, and affiliate portals.
