HBO Adjusting Cast & Crew To Upcoming Series ‘The Idol’

HBO announced that the cast and crew of their upcoming series The Idol is being adjusted, according to Deadline. It is currently unclear as to which members of the cast and crew will be staying or leaving, but the series has been set to star Abel Tesfaye (Uncut Gems), also known as The Weeknd, Lily-Rose Depp (The King), and Suzanna Son (Red Rocket).

The Idol’s creative team continues to build, refine, and evolve their vision for the show and they have aligned on a new creative direction. The production will be adjusting its cast and crew accordingly to best serve this new approach to the series. We look forward to sharing more information soon,” an HBO spokeswoman told Deadline.

According to Deadline, the series, which is being produced by WarnerMedia, is not being scrapped. However, the show has been in production for the last few months, making these upcoming changes an unusual move.

The Idol will follow a female pop star who starts a romance with a Los Angeles club owner who is the leader of a secret club, according to Deadline.

Joseph Epstein (Health And Wellness) was set to serve as showrunner. Tesfaye, Epstein, Sam Levinson (Euphoria), Ashley Levinson (Malcolm & Marie), Kevin Turen (Operation: Endgame), Aaron L. Gilbert (Ghostbusters: Afterlife), Mary Laws (The Neon Demon), La Mar C. Taylor, and Wassim “SAL” Slaiby, and Reza Fahim were all set to executive produce the series, according to Deadline.

Taylor, Slaiby, and Fahim are all co-founders of The Weeknd’s record label, XO. Slaiby serves as his manager and CEO of the label. None have prior producing works.

Per Deadline, Epstein and Laws were also set to write for the series on top of co-executive producing.

Amy Seimetz (The Girlfriend Experience) was set to direct all six episodes of  The Idol‘s first season, according to Deadline.
