Yesterday during Marvel’s San Diego Comic Con panel, Marvel Studios announced numerous new shows and movies for their upcoming Phase 4. One show they announced was the television show Hawkeye, which is set to premiere in the fall of 2021 on Disney’s streaming service Disney+. Hawkeye himself, Jeremy Renner, took to the stage to make the official announcement. The show is expected to explore more of Jeremy Renner’s Avengers Endgame persona, Ronin, as well as introduce Kate Bishop.
Fans expected to see Kate Bishop in Avengers Endgame when there was released footage in the trailer of Barton training his daughter at archery. According to Den of Geeks, the show will follow Clint Barton as he trains new, young female archer, Kate Bishop, to be the new Hawkeye. The Hawkeye comics were created by Matt Fraction, David Aja, and Javier Pulido’s and follow Hawkeye during his off-days from the Avengers.
Marvel Comic fans know the name Kate Bishop, as she made her debut in 2005’s Young Avengers #1. She was first introduced when her sister’s wedding was ambushed by bad guys, which led to the arrival of the Young Avengers. Sadly the Young Avengers botched the rescue, allowing Kate to save the day. Later she joined the team alongside Cassie Lang, Antman’s daughter, and thanks to her wealth she was able to bankroll the team’s costumes and secret lair. Kate is young socialite who funded the Young Avengers, which is a team of young heroes that formed when original Avengers disbanded and these heroes took on their identity. Upon the disbandment of the Avengers, the young heroes took their identities. Clint Barton was killed during an attack by an insane Scarlet Witch, which allowed her to take the mantle including using his bow and arrows. While taking on the mantle of Hawkeye, Kate put her own spin on the hero with her flair for archery and various forms of martial arts she proved to be a worthy successor. When, however, Clint was resurrected he tried to reclaim his mantle. However, Kate would not give up the mantle of Hawkeye. Since then Clint has helped to train Kate and improve her archery skills, but they still have an uneasy coexistence as Kate learns her mentor isn’t the greatest role model. The two Hawkeyes stay out of each other’s way with Clint living in New York and Kate residing in LA running her own detective agency with her faithful canine, Lucky the Pizza Dog.
According to Collider, it is believed this will be smart way to pass on the torch of Hawkeye. The Marvel Disney+ TV shows are expected to tie into the MCU movies allowing for this torch to be passed onto Bishop. Renner described the show as, “What I get to do in the show ultimately is shepherd an amazing character, ultimately a better version of me and the sentiment of that is the fiber of what Hawkeye is, at least what I think Hawkeye is – a superhero without superpowers and I get to teach someone else to be a superhero without superpowers.”
The show won’t go into production for another year, and the role of Kate Bishop has yet to be cast but fans can expect to see the duo on screen by fall of 2021.
