ABC’s long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy is set to shake up its lineup with some new faces and a familiar one taking center stage. According to Deadline, actor and recording artist Trevor Jackson (Grown-ish, American Crime) who appeared in the final two episodes of season twenty One has been promoted to a series regular for season twenty two . Joining him are two new recurring cast members: Jade Pettyjohn (Big Sky, Little Fires Everywhere) and Anita Kalathara (Doom Patrol, India Sweets and Spices).
Jackson will reprise his role as Wes Bryant, a confident, educated, and sometimes arrogant new intern who made an impression at Grey Sloan Memorial in last season’s finale. His flirting relationship with Simone (Alexis Floyd) strained relations with Lucas (Niko Terho), laying the groundwork for future drama. As noted by Deadline, Jackson’s initial guest role included the option of becoming a series regular, which has now been confirmed following great feedback from fans and producers.
Pettyjohn will play Dani, a fresh-faced medical intern characterized as excited but worried, with a strong sense of humor and a desire to impress on her first day. Kalathara appears as Kavita, a great plastic surgeon who exudes confidence, directness, and professionalism. According to Deadline, Pettyjohn makes her season twenty two debut in the premiere, while Kalathara debuts in episode three.
This marks the first major cast addition since the start of season nine teen, when Grey’s Anatomy introduced five new interns played by Alexis Floyd (Inventing Anna), Niko Terho (The Thing About Harry), Harry Shum Jr. (Glee), Adelaide Kane (Reign), and Midori Francis (Dash & Lily). As Deadline previously reported, showrunner Meg Marinis (Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal) had hinted that Jackson’s promotion was likely after his character’s strong reception in season twenty one’s finale.
“We were extremely happy with how that character turned out,” Marinis told Deadline. “Trevor is great we’ll definitely see more of him.”
Beyond Grey’s Anatomy, Jackson is also an established musician, having recently released his EP I Love You. Pettyjohn continues to build an impressive résumé with appearances in Hulu’s Little Fires Everywhere and Francesca Scorsese’s film Fish Out of Water. Kalathara, who portrayed a young Mindy Kaling in The Mindy Project pilot, has also appeared in HBO Max’s Doom Patrol and the feature India Sweets and Spices.
Grey’s Anatomy twenty-second season premieres October 9 on ABC and will pick up in the immediate aftermath of season twenty one’s explosive finale, teasing new beginnings and new complications for Grey Sloan’s latest class of doctors.
