Greta Lee (Past Lives, St. Vincent) has officially left Apple TV‘s hit series The Morning Show, the actress confirmed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
After joining the Emmy-winning series in season two, Lee, who plays Stella Bak, made her last appearance on the sixth episode of season four, called “If Then,” where the media CEO publicly breaks down after her AI gambit fails in spectatuclar fashion, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Showrunner Charlotte Stoudt (Homeland, Pieces of Her) said that the ordeal was an appropriate way to end Bak’s arc, telling The Hollywood Reporter “I was interested in Stella as a person who grew up in tech, who always thought of tech as something like a superpower that could enhance her. What happens when tech becomes a way to look in the mirror and ask, who am I really? Am I on the right path?”
Per The Hollywood Reporter, during an unveiling event for the media company’s experimental AI program, Stella’s affair with her boss Celine Dumont’s (Marion Cotillard) husband Miles (Aaron Pierre) is exposed by a chatbot, leading her to resign as the head of the company that she had dedicated her career to restoring. To make matters worse, as Stella hopes to run away with Miles, he stands her up at the airport, leaving her to leave the country in disgrace.
“It was very emotional [filming her final scene]. Just thinking about it, I tear up. It was very hard to leave her, even though it was time for Stella to go rediscover some part of herself, and she couldn’t do that at UBN,” Stoudt told The Hollywood Reporter. “She had to get on that plane by herself. When you really are at a crossroads, people can support you, but you can’t have a buddy. You have to figure it out by yourself.”
Commenting on her character’s departure, Lee told The Hollywood Reporter “We’re with these characters for so long, it’s surreal. I haven’t been able to say anything because I didn’t want to spoil it, but I’ve known for some time now that this is the end of the road for her and this is her goodbye.”
Lee also stars in Tron: Ares, which made its theatrical debut on October 10.
The Morning Show season four releases new episodes on Apple TV every Wednesday.
