Netflix’s hit series, Grace and Frankie is coming to an end on Netflix with its 7th season. The final season will contain 16 episodes, bringing the series total to 96 episodes. Grace and Frankie will conclude its run as Netflix’s longest original series to date. Marta Kauffman and Howard J. Morris, the series co-creators and showrunners, joked that “It’s thrilling and somehow fitting, that our show about the challenges, as well as the beauty and dignity of aging, will be the oldest show on Netflix.”
Grace and Frankie stars Jane Fonda (Monster-In-Law, Book Club) as uptight Grace and Lily Tomlin (9 to 5, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) as freespirit Frankie. The pair’s lives are turned upside down when their husbands, played by Martin Sheen (The West Wing) and Sam Waterston (Law and Order), come out as gay and reveal they fell in love with each other. The unique experience draws Grace and Frankie into an unexpected friendship. The actresses, Fonda and Tomlin, made a statement on the show ending,
We are both delighted and heartbroken that ‘Grace & Frankie’ will be back for its seventh, though final, season. We’re so grateful that our show has been able to deal with issues that have really connected to our grand generation. And their kids, and amazingly, their kids as well! We’ll miss these two old gals, Grace and Frankie, as much as many of their fans will, but we’ll still be around. We’ve outlasted so many things—just hope we don’t outlast the planet.
The show has been well received by fans and critics alike with the show earning 11 Emmy nominations, six Screen Actors Guild Award nominations, and a Golden Globe nomination for Tomlin. Netflix’s Vice President of Original Series, Cindy Holland, said, “Since its premiere in 2015, ‘Grace and Frankie’ has expertly and hilariously demystified the experience of growing older and given a voice to the fastest growing segment of our population.” Holland continues, “Jane, Lily, Sam, and Martin have become role models for fans that span generations around the world, and we are so proud to have been a part of the show’s journey from day one. A special thanks to Marta, Howard, and the team at Skydance, who have been superb partners every step of the way.” Skydance Television produces the series with Netflix.
While season 7 will be the show’s final season, fans still have two seasons to look forward to. Season 6 of Grace and Frankie will be released in January 2020.
