After all theses years, the grumpy French concierge from the Dragonfly Inn is finally getting a backstory.
Back in January, Netflix announced that they would be giving Gilmore Girls a second life on the streaming service. The reboot has been given an official subtitle and will be called Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. Sadly, the reboot will only consist of four extra long episodes, but hey, we will take as much Gilmore Girls as we can get.
While we can look forward to seeing Lorelei and Rory Gilmore in a world of smartphones and Twitter, the revival will also be taking a look at the past. Particularly, Michel’s past.
In an interview US Weekly, Yanic Truesdale opened up about what we can expect to see happen with his character, Michel. “We kind of haven’t seen Michel outside of work, really,” says Truesdale. “I think very rarely he was outside of the inn. And we didn’t know much about his personal life. So this time is different. We know much more.”
Truesdale explained that the backstory has benefited him as an actor, saying “That is nice for me as an actor because it gives me a backstory. But it gives me meat for the character because he, you know, I definitely have an arc and stuff going on in my personal life that affect the character. So the fans can expect to discover more about Michel.”
Michel was definitely a staple in Stars Hollow. He was rarely seen outside of work (or not wearing his signature suit), but he was an important part of Lorelei’s life as her co-worker (and friend). And his snarky remarks and total apathy were sometimes too savage for his own good.
If Michel is getting more of a backstory and character development, we can’t help but wonder if that means he will be getting a romantic interest. When prompted about the subject, however, Truesdale danced around the question, saying, “That I can’t answer, but you will definitely find out more about him.”
Can Netflix add the reboot already?
In other recent Gilmore Girls news, Netflix recently announced that starting this month, all 7 season of the series will be available to stream internationally.
A release date has yet to be set for Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, but it is expected to hit Netflix later this year.
