Gillian Anderson Cast In Starz Series ‘American Gods’

Gillian Anderson is teaming back up with Bryan Fuller.

According to Deadline, Anderson, who starred as Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier in Fuller’s under-viewed critical darling Hannibal, has been cast in Starz’s adaptation of the widely acclaimed Neil Gaiman fantasy novel American Gods. She will be portraying Media, the New God who acts as public relations for the other New Gods. Media thrives off of the adoration of the public and can transform into different celebrities. Fuller and Michael Green are both writers and showrunners on the series.

Both Anderson and Fuller took to twitter to share their excitement for the new series:

American Gods centers on the growing tension between the Old and New Gods of the world. The Old Gods, with their mythological roots, are losing followers to the modern-day New Gods. The appeal of these New Gods is their representation of modern society’s obsession with media, technology, money and drugs. American Gods tells the story of Shadow Moon, an ex-con and bodyguard, and Mr. Wednesday, a conman and Old God, as they gather allies for a battle against the New Gods.

This marks another high-profile television project for SAG, Golden Globe and Emmy-winner Gillian Anderson. She just recently reprised her career-making role as Dana Scully in Fox’s reboot/continuation of The X-Files. Anderson is in the middle of filming the third and final season of the critically acclaimed mystery-thriller The Fall, which is set to premiere later this year. Early this year Anderson portrayed Anna Pavlovna Scherer in BBC and A&E Network’s adaptation of War and Peace alongside Paul Dano.

Along with Anderson American Gods stars Ricky Whittle (The 100) as Shadow Moon, Peter Stormare (Fargo, The Big Lebowski) as Czernobog, Ian McShane (Deadwood, Ray Donovan) as Mr. Wednesday, Cloris Leachman (Raising Hope, The Facts of Life, The Mary Tyler Moore Show) as Zorya Vechernyaya, Emily Browning (Sucker Punch, High Flyers) as Laura Moon and Crispin Glover (Back to the Future, Dead Man, Texas Rising) as Mr. World. David Slade (Hard Candy) is on board to direct the pilot and additional episodes. Fuller, Green, Slade and Gaiman are executive producers on American Gods, along with Craig Cegielski and Stefanie Berk of FremantleMedia North America.
