After Prime Video suddenly announced that the new series My Lady Jane would not be renewed for second season, fans were outraged, and according to Screenrant, famed fantasy author George R.R. Martin (Game of Thrones) was one of them. In a recent post on his blog, “Not a Blog,” he shared a glowing review of the fantasy romance.
My Lady Jane is a historical retelling of the later life of Jane Gray, popularly nicknamed the Nine Days Queen since she was executed only nine days into her rule. The series is also based on a novel of the same name. The retelling puts a twist on real history: with witty dialogue and spunky characters, the show gives a fantastical look at 16th-century England. The show has been compared to Bridgerton in many ways with its modernization of the past.
Despite its adoring fan base and popularity on social media sites, Prime Video canceled the series after just one season, leaving fans of both the original novel and the first season feeling jilted. However, these fans are now in good company as fantasy legend Martin has joined the ranks of My Lady Jane supporters.
In his blog post, Martin stated, “Speaking of television shows, I have always loved alternate history and Jane Grey, England’s nine-days queen, has always fascinated me. Small wonder, then, that I really enjoyed MY LADY JANE, clever and original historical fantasy on Amazon Prime, set in an England full of witches and shapechangers, where Jane lasts more than nine days…Meredith Glynn is one of the showrunners. I had the pleasure of working with her on one of the GAME OF THRONES spinoffs that HBO shelved a few years back, and knowing her talents, it did not surprise me that MY LADY JANE was so much fun. Witty and original, it reminded me a bit of THE GREAT, a show I loved. Alas, THE GREAT is gone, and it appears MY LADY JANE is too. Amazon did not renew it for a second season” via Screenrant.
Martin’s positive comments towards the series have sparked an even larger outcry for a second season. Petitions have been made online, amassing over 65,000 signatures trying to renew the show. With critical acclaim, the series has over 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, and with the support of a television titan, fans are not losing hope that Prime Video will bring back My Lady Jane for a second season.
