George Clooney’s ‘Catch-22’ Lands at Hulu

Hulu is about to see a whole lot more Clooney. In addition to the streaming service’s recent debut of the entirety of NBC’s medical drama ER, Hulu has also acquired George Clooney’s upcoming project Catch-22.

According to Deadline, Hulu penned a six episode straight-to-series deal with Clooney for his limited series adaptation of Catch-22. The series will be based on Joseph Heller’s famous novel of the same name. The story follows Captain Yossarian, a member of the US Air Force, serving in Italy during WWII as he tries to complete his service requirements and go home.

The story was famously adapted into a feature film in 1970, directed by Mike Nichols. The novel has a troubled history with television, however: shortly after the film adaptation, a pilot episode for a TV comedy version of Heller’s tale was made in 1973 starring Richard Drefyuss as Yossarian. However, the project fell flat and did not move forward.

News of Clooney’s plans for his own take on the classic story broke in November. This project will be Clooney’s first return to television following his role on ER.

Along with serving as executive producer, Clooney will star as Colonel Cathcart in the limited series and direct all six episodes. Luke Davies (best known for his screenplay for Lion) and David Michod (The Rover, War Machine) will co-write the series.

A premiere date for Catch-22 has not yet been set.
