Warner Bros. is officially moving forward with a feature film set in the world of Game of Thrones, marking a major expansion of George R.R. Martin’s universe beyond television. The project will focus on Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros, one of the most defining eras in the franchise’s history. Beau Willimon (Andor, House of Cards) has been hired to write the script, bringing his experience with political drama and large‑scale storytelling to the adaptation.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the development was first hinted at in a recent profile of Martin, which revealed that HBO and Warner Bros. had been exploring separate versions of the Aegon story. While HBO has been considering a series centered on the Targaryen ruler, the film division has been envisioning a theatrical project designed to match the scale of major fantasy epics. The movie is being imagined as a sweeping, Dune-style feature that would bring the early Targaryen dynasty to life with a scope far beyond what has been seen on television.
Willimon’s involvement was initially reported by Page Six Hollywood, signaling that the film is gaining momentum even as Warner Bros. navigates industry changes and a potential merger with Paramount Skydance. Paramount’s David Ellison has previously expressed admiration for Game of Thrones, calling it his favorite HBO series, which could bode well for the franchise’s future under new leadership.
The idea of a Game of Thrones movie has surfaced before. Original showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss (The Three‑Body Problem, Gemini Man) once pitched HBO on ending the flagship series with a trilogy of theatrical films, though the network ultimately chose to keep the story within its subscription model. Now, with multiple Westeros‑related projects in development, the franchise appears poised for another major expansion.
HBO continues to build out its television slate as well. House of the Dragon is set to return for its third season this summer, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is currently filming its second season. Together with the newly developing film, these projects signal that the Targaryen legacy will remain central to the future of the Game of Thrones universe.
