HBO’s illustrious Game of Thrones (GOT) universe has plans to expand. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the George R.R. Martin (The Winds of Winter, Fire & Blood) novels are being tapped for multiple prequels for the network. As of now, the only confirmed series is the Targaryen-focused House of the Dragon that occurs 300 years prior to the events of GOT. While the following list of potential series is currently in development, not all or even most will make it to air.
The Hollywood Reporter relays the second potential series will follow the founder of Dorne, queen and legendary warrior, Nymeria. Set nearly 1,000 years prior to GOT, it would be the oldest tale in the Westeros timeline. In the original series, fans received a snippet of Dorne’s Sunspear through Indira Varma’s (Luther, For Life) Ellaria Sand and her coup to support Daenerys Targaryen’s rule.
Stories on the lives of Westeros’ commoners could be explored in the fourth project, via The Hollywood Reporter. Named after the congested ghetto of King’s Landing, Flea Bottom could shine a light on a different demographic in the universe. Departing from the narratives of the ruthless in the royal court, the series could highlight the everyday Westerosian and common criminal looking for a come-up.
Another series would center character already cast in the House of the Dragon prequel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 9 Voyages project would be a spinoff for Lord Corlys Velaryon, who is being played by Steve Toussaint (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Judge Dredd). Better known as The Sea Snake, Velaryon is a master navy man and head of the House of Velaryon. Bruno Heller (Rome, The Mentalist) is currently leading the development of this project, which if greenlit, would become the first GOT series to feature an actor of color as the lead.
Finally, two aforementioned projects are picking up some steam. The first up is a project based on novellas about two characters, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The show would follow the adventures of Dunk and Egg, hedge knight and his dutiful squire. Taking place 90 years prior to Martin’s most popular GOT narratives, Dunk is none other than Ser Duncan the Tall who would later become King Aegon V Targaryen. For the second, HBO wants to explore Martin’s medieval saga through animation. While little details have been set in stone for the potential animated series, Martin’s large catalog of tales spanning thousands of years would fit perfectly for the medium.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, at least three more series are rumored of being in development, but these previous titles currently have the most backbone. HBO’s Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys envisions more shows from the GOT realm, but he does have a limit.
“Ten would be too many,” Bloys stated via The Hollywood Reporter. Fans can expect the first of these sequels, House of the Dragon, to premiere its 10-episode season in 2022. A separate prequel starring Naomi Watts (The Ring, Gypsy) had filmed pilot but was not picked up to series.
