FX‘s sister network, FXX has confirmed the fifth and final season for the series You’re The Worst which is set to premiere on Wednesday, January 9, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on the network. . The premiere date was recently announced today by President of Program Strategy and COO at FX Networks, Chuck Saftler.
The show follows narcissist Jimmy Shive-Overly (Chris Geere) who is cynical about romance and love and depressive Gretchen Cutler (Aya Cash) who shys away from vulnerability and real intimacy. After the pair initially meet at a wedding and decide to hook-up regularly, they begin to realize they are falling for each other. The show also stars Desmin Borges as Edgar Quintero, an Iraq War veteran suffering from PTSD and Jimmy’s roommate, and Kether Donohue as Lindsay Jillian, Gretchen’s enabler best friend.
Throughout the following seasons, Jimmy and Gretchen navigate their fears involving heartbreak, deep-rooted insecurities and other feelings resulting from mental health issues. Through the hardships they experience together, they both learn to become better versions of their selves. They eventually break up and become involved with other people, but eventually find themselves being pulled towards each other once again.
Earlier in August this year at the Television Critics Association, creator Stephen Falk mentioned the first episode of the series’ last season will be a throwback to 1990’s romantic comedies and won’t include the main characters in the first part of the episode. Which ironically is exactly what won over critics and audiences with You’re the Worst, is the creative ways the show would subvert the usual stereotypes of romantic comedy fair.
