FXX Sets Premiere Date for ‘Archer: 1999’

On Monday, April 15, FXX President Chuck Saftler announced the premiere date for Archer: 1999, the 10th season of the network’s Emmy Award-winning animated series. According to Variety, the new season is set to debut at 10 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29.

Voice actor H. Jon Benjamin will reprise his role of Sterling Archer in the upcoming season. Since the series premiered in 2009, fans have loyally watched as the heavy drinking spy set forth on a range of adventures alongside his colleagues: Malory Archer (Jessica Walter), Aisha Lana Kane (Aisha Tyler), Cyril Figgis (Chris Parnell), Cheryl Tunt (Judy Greer), Pam Poovey (Amber Nash), Ray Gillette (Adam Reed) and Dr. Algernop Krieger (Lucky Yates). Creator Adam Reed, who is also responsible for the popular Adult Swim show Frisky Dingo, drew inspiration for Archer from James Bond and comic art of the mid-century.

Season 10, which will air in half-hour episodes, launches Reed’s well-loved yet sharp-tongued cast into space. As shown by the recently released season trailer, Captains Archer and Kana will board the M/V Seamus, joined by an intergalactic crew of misfits.  In less than two minutes, the trailer makes promises of excitement, humor,  and adventure as it shows the crew fighting robotic birds, racing through space, and navigating gigantic extraterrestrial bodies.

With this, the spy series makes a genre-bending turn toward space opera. But the pivot is on par for the long running comedy. From past seasons like Dreamland, Vice and most recently Danger Island, Archer has explored a wide range of settings and themes.  This flexibility is made possible by a pivotal plot point: at the end of Season 7, Sterling Archer was shot and left comatose. The subsequent two seasons have played with this, exploring the protagonist’s dreams during his presently persistent coma. Season 10 is no different.

With that being said, long time fans must be looking forward to seeing how the show’s humor will be adapted for its new interstellar context.

Tune into FXX on May 29 to see the Season 10 premiere.
