FX’s ‘Far Cry’ Series Grabs Steve Buscemi For Unknown Role

Steve Buscemi has joined the cast of FX and Hulu’s forthcoming Far Cry series for the silver screen, according to Tuesday report by Deadline. The Emmy-nominated actor will appear in an unspecified role.

For those out of the loop, Far Cry is an adaptation of a beloved series of first-person shooter games by software developer Ubisoft. While each of the six main entries in the series vary wildly in their premise, they share the central throughline of dropping the player into an open-world environment and tasking them with the elimination of a ruthless (and often entertaining) dictator. 2021’s Far Cry 6, for example, takes place on the Cuba-inspired island of Yara, and sees the protagonist lead a guerilla uprising against despot Antón Castillo (Giancarlo Esposito).

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia mainstay Rob Mac (Mythic Quest) and filmmaker Noah Hawley (Fargo) first turned heads last November when they announced they would herald an adaptation of the show as executive producers. Mac will also star in the series, which as of now, has yet to release any concrete plot details. What we do know is that like the games, Far Cry will act as an anthology, with each season remaining largely disconnected from its brethren.  White Lotus and American Horror Story have employed a similar conceit to great success, so it makes plenty of sense — provided that the show garners enough attention for a renewal, of course.

“Getting to work alongside Noah Hawley is a dream realized,” Mac told Variety last winter. “Ubisoft has been remarkably generous, entrusting us with one of the most iconic video-game worlds ever created. And through it all, my FX family continues to lift me up with their constant belief and support.”

Much like the Far Cry series itself, Steve Buscemi’s career has had a wide-spanning trajectory. The eight-time Emmy-nominated actor has appeared in everything from Reservoir Dogs to 30 Rock to Hotel Transylvania. He even played the central antagonist of the original Fargo film Hawley’s FX series is sourced from, a fact that makes his arrival onto the set of Far Cry almost feel predestined.

“What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it’s an anthology,” said Hawley in a statement to Variety last winter. “Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme. To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true. I’m excited to partner with Rob and bring our shared irreverent, ambitious sensibility to the screen.”

The Far Cry series will stream on Hulu in the United States and on Disney+ internationally at an unknown date.
