FX had quite a night at this year’s TCA Awards.
Variety reports that both FX’s The People v. O.J. Simpson and The Americans took home top honors at tonight’s awards. The People v. O.J. Simpson won awards for outstanding achievement in movies, miniseries and specials and for program of the year, as well as an individual achievement in drama award for Sarah Paulson’s portrayal of prosecutor Marcia Clark. The Americans won best achievement in drama for the second year in a row.
Plenty of other fantastic, non-FX shows were recognized by the TCA Awards this year as well, and it was also a damn good night for women in TV (and here it is important to note that the TCA’s do not separate categories by gender). Rachel Bloom (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) won best individual achievement in comedy, Samantha Bee’s Full Frontal With Samantha Bee was awarded outstanding achievement in news and information, Lily Tomlin was recognized with a career achievement award, and a heritage award was given to The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
Other TCA Award winners included Netflix’s Making A Murderer for reality programming, PBS’ Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood for youth programming, USA’s Mr. Robot for best new program, and ABC’s Black-ish for outstanding achievement in comedy.
TCA President Amber Dowling spoke about the current state of women in television and said, “This was a truly landmark season — not just for television, but for women in television. We had an unprecedented amount of female winners this year, which is a testament to both the talented actresses who were honored tonight, as well as to the growing number of high-quality roles being created for and by women. It’s extremely encouraging to see this growing trend being embraced, accepted, and expanded upon, and I look forward to seeing even more of it in the future.”
The 32nd annual TCA Awards were hosted by Jaime Camil (Jane The Virgin) at the Beverly Hilton hotel. TCA members, which includes a couple hundred professional TV critics and journalists, voted on the award winners.
