Bob Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company, announced that Hulu would be the official streaming site for FX. During an earnings call, Iger told investors that John Landgraf, Chairman of FX Network and FX Productions had, “Produced of high-quality and award-winning content and will become a key content driver for Hulu.”
Starting in March 2020, FX shows will be featured on Hulu. Iger revealed that four original shows from FX would make their debut on Hulu. So far, only three of the four shows have been announced, Cate Blanchett’s miniseries Mrs. America, Alex Garland’s Devs, A Teacher, and Jeff Bridges’ The Old Man will be released exclusively under “FX on Hulu.” Current and past FX shows will be featured on the streaming site as well.
Randy Freer, Hulu CEO, commented after the Disney call that, “We’re excited to become the official streaming home to the award-winning current and legacy series that FX has produced over nearly two decades, as well as brand-new original series that will be exclusive to Hulu subscribers – all available through FX on Hulu.” He added, “FX has solidified its position as a premium brand that consumers are passionate about, and we can’t wait to bring its valuable content offering to our customers, all in one place.”
In late October, Landgraf spoke on the competition the network was facing with the growing streaming companies. This new Hulu collaboration seems to have evened the odds for the network. “This will allow us to expand FX’s original programming lineup and to reach Hulu’s growing audience of young and highly engaged subscribers, whom we believe will love these shows,” Landgraf said after the reveal.
FX will bring over forty series to Hulu’s 28.5 million subscribers. Since 2014 FX has won 57 Emmy’s and won more Golden Gloves than their streaming competitors. Landgraf affirmed, “We are more committed than ever to quality over quantity, with our primary focus on excellence that can cut through the clutter at a time of unprecedented consumer choice. This is a game-changing opportunity for FX, and we can’t wait to embark on this journey with Randy and his great Hulu team.”
Next week a $12.99-a-month package, including Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu, will be available to streamers.
