As reported by Deadline, FX’s upcoming new instalment in the American Story banner, American Love Story, has announced the casting of Grace Gummer (Mr. Robot, Let The Right One In), Sydney Lemmon (Succession, Tar), and Alessandro Nivola (The Brutalist, American Hustle). The show will be Ryan Murphy’s (Glee, Pose) newest venture.
W Magazine reports that American Love Story will be based on the tragic love story of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Basset. Building on the previous shows, American Crime and Sports Story, the series will be a scripted version of real-life events. The couple were married in 1996, only to be tragically killed in a plane crash three years later off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard. In a made-for-TV moment, the couple met when Kennedy was shopping at an upscale Calvin Klein location and Basset was assigned to handle VIP clientele. They would go on to become a shooting star power couple who were often targeted by the tabloids before their untimely demise. Their fashion remains influential even to this day.
Deadline reports that the first season will focus on the young couple’s relationship that began with pizazz but soon wore thin from the gaze of the paparazzi. The stress of their careers and rumors of family conflict all came to an abrupt end when their private plane crash-landed in the ocean.
Deadline has reported that other cast members have been previously announced. Sarah Pidgeon (Gotham, Tiny Beautiful Things) is set to play Caroly Basset, Paul Kelly as JFK Jr., and Naomi Watts (King Kong, The Impossible) will be playing the role of Jackie O.
American Love Story will be executive-produced by Murphy, Brad Simpson (Crazy Rich Asians, World War Z), Nina Jacobson (The Hunger Games, One Day), D.V. DiVencentis (High Fidelity, Gross Pointe Blank), and Connor Hines (Dollface, Space Force).
