Fox has just ordered its second medical drama pilot.
Deadline reports that the network has given a pilot order Neal Baer’s The Beast. This announcement follows Fox’s previous pilot order for medical drama The Resident. Both projects come from 20th TV. The Beast marks Fox’s sixth drama pilot this season following The Resident, legal drama Controversy, military drama Behind Enemy Lines, vampire drama The Passage from Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), and an untitled X-Men pilot to join FX’s Legion.
The Beast, written by Baer and Dawn DeNoon, is a medical procedural that centers on a doctor with a clinical fear of death. Each episode will focus on three different, challenging medical cases. By the end of each episode two of the patients will live, and one will die.
Baer has plenty of experience with medical dramas after having written on and executive produced NBC’s ER. For his work on the series Baer was nominated for seven Emmys, two of which were for writing while the rest were for Outstanding Drama Series. Medical dramas seem like a perfect fit for Baer, who is a practicing pediatrician.
The Beast is executive produced by Baer, DeNoon and Jessica Shulman. The project comes from 20th TV and Baer Bones.
