Hulu has been hard at work with its new series Southern Bastards. The series has managed to gain five actors onto the project. The actors are Johnathan Tucker (God Is a Bullet, The Mantawauk Caves), Amin Joesph (One of Them Days, The Other, Gold), Ethan Suplee (Imperfect Women, The Terminal List: Dark Wolf), Derek Luke (Michael, Rare Objects), and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (Red for Revolution, Nickel Boys).
For those who don’t know, the series is based off of the comic book series under the same name. The series is about a determined military veteran who returns home to deal with family history, only to discover a criminal empire that is controlled by a local high school football coach. According to Deadline, Tucker will play the character Esaw Goings, a muscled and lean linebacker. He is an assisted coach for Craw County’s football team and is a go to enforcer for coach Boss’ dirty work. Joseph will play Hardy Whitworth, a former football star turned sheriff who is morally corrupt because of his involvement with coach Boss. Suolee will play Eugene “Materhead” Maples, a former offensive lineman, who is a sidekick to assistant coach Goings, he doubles as an enforcer as well for coach Boss’ dirty business. Luke will play Uncle Lou, a sharp and charismatic former tour manager with hustler instincts who views football as both an opportunity and a business. Finally, Ellis-Taylor will play Veneratta, the main character’s mother, who is indignant when it comes to how the military treats her chid and urges for their child to reach out to their father for help.
The cast consists of Kevin Bacon (Family Movie, The Best You Can), Erin Kellyman (Twenty Twenty Six, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple), Tim McGraw (The Mighty Nein, 1883), Tucker (God Is a Bullet, The Mantawauk Caves), Joesph (One of Them Days, The Other, Gold), Suplee (Imperfect Women, The Terminal List: Dark Wolf), Luke (Michael, Rare Objects), and Ellis-Taylor (Red for Revolution, Nickel Boys). The series showrunner is Matt Olmstead (Chicago Med, Chicago P.D.) and will produced by Mia DaCosta (Hedda, Ghost Tape), Jason Aaron (Star Wars: Screaming Citadel, Marvel’s Midnight Suns), Kate Barry (Welcome to America, Brian Wong!, Solo Traveling with Tracee Ellis Ross), and Ryan Coogler (Eyes of Wakanda, Sinners).
There has been no trailer for the upcoming series so far, so we will have to keep our eyes open for when Hulu drops the trailer.
