DC Studios’ recent San Diego Comic-Con 2024 trailer of the adult animated series Creature Commandos revealed that DC antagonist Circe will make her debut in the show, according to Comicbook.com. DC Studios has cast Anya Chalotra (Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, The Witcher) to portray Circe’s character.
According to mxdwn, Creature Commandos is the first series that CEO of DC Studios James Gunn (The Suicide Squad, Guardians of the Galaxy) and Peter Safran (Annabelle: Creation, Shazam! Fury of the Gods) will debut to reboot the DC Universe, relaunching new DC stories across movies, television and games to be more cohesive and consistent between each other. The official logline promises the series will “track a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. When all else fails…they’re your last, worst option.”
To provide additional context, “the Creature Commandos are a crop of human-monster hybrids who carry out military actions for the government, initially created by J.M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick in Weird War Tales #93,” Comicbook.com explains. The gang in the animated series will feature Bride of Frankenstein, Eric Frankenstein, Dr. Nina Mazursky, Doctor Phosphorus, G.I. Robot, Rick Flag Sr. and Weasel.
The Creature Commandos trailer cements the quirky action promised by the debuting team of monsters, but Wonder Woman’s villain, Circe, is revealed in a flash. Circe can be seen levitating, turning oncoming bullets into purple butterflies before they can reach her.
According to Comicbook.com, Creature Commandos was “created by Robert Kanigher and Harry G. Peter in 1949’s Wonder Woman #37, [and] Circe is introduced as a powerful goddess with, among other superpowers, the ability to turn unsuspecting people into animals. She is most often an antagonist of Wonder Woman, given the hero’s tie to Greek mythology, inciting the events of George Perez and Russell Braun’s iconic storyline ‘War of the Gods.’ Outside of her Wonder Woman appearances, Circe has since become an antagonist of Supergirl, Superman, and even Rip Hunter.”
Creature Commandos will premiere this December on Max and debut with seven episodes for the first season, per mxdwn.
