First ‘American Gods’ Trailer Released at San Diego Comic-Con

Starz’ new original series American Gods finally has a trailer, and it is nothing short of perfection.

Since the show’s announcement, hype for Starz’ adaptation of Gaiman’s American Gods has continued to grow. But until Starz unveiled the first ever trailer for American Gods at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, fans had yet to receive  any glimpse of the show or the cast in action. Now we can watch the trailer over and over again and enjoy it in all its glory.

Check out the stunning trailer below.

Starz originally greenlit the series back in June 2015, and ever since the series has been coming together piece by piece. Since January, casting announcements have been made starting with Ricky Whittle (The 100) as protagonist Shadow Moon. As the star-studded cast grew, Starz announced Ian McShane (Deadwood) was cast as Mr. Wednesday, Gillian Anderon (Hannibal) as Media, Orlando Jones (Sleepy Hollow) as Mr. Nancy, Crispin Glover (Back to the Future) as Mr. World and Jonathan Tucker (Kingdom) as Low-Key Lyesmith. Additional cast members include Emily Browning (Sucker Punch) as Laura, Shadow’s wife; Sean Harris (The Borgias) as Mad Sweeney, the leprechaun; Yetide Badaki as love goddess Bilquis; and Bruce Langley as Technology Boy (clearly a newer god).

The plot follows Shadow Moon (Whittle), a former con-artist, who is released from prison after he learns his wife has died. Following his wife’s funeral, Shadow ends up as the bodyguard and traveling companion to Mr. Wednesday (McShane), who turns out to be way more mysterious and powerful than he first appears. Mr. Wednesday is actually a god from an older tradition who is traveling across the country to gather an army to battle a newer and younger pantheon of gods. A war is on the horizon between the gods of mythology and new gods who are sprouting from modern society’s obsessions with money, technology, media, celebrities, and drugs.

Gaiman’s novel American Gods on which the series is based has won multiple awards including the Hugo, Nebula, and Bram Stoker awards for Best Novel. The novel has also been made available to many different audiences and has been translated into over 30 languages.

Filming is currently underway for American Gods and the series is expected to premiere in 2017.
