Disney+ released a new X-Men ’97 trailer as the mutants prepare for season one’s final act. The teaser combines scenes from past episodes with a preview of what is to come, highlighting Cable leading the charge, the return of goddess Storm, and a shot of Magneto donning his iconic X-Men: The Animated Series outfit. View the trailer below.
The trailer opens with a stripped-down piano version of the epic theme song as Charles Xavier describes his dream for mutants. As the score revs up with an 80s rock-synth feel, we transition to Cyclops’ lines from episode seven, “Bright Eyes,” speaking of being the hope mutants need. Then, we hear Storm’s regal voice echo that the X-Men must do what they have always done: “Believe in each other.” New scenes collected in the trailer include Roberto and Jubilee being chased by an angry mob, Nightcrawler dueling thugs with two blades, and Jean Grey levitating Cyclops and Cable on the battlefield. The icing on the cake: Magneto’s monologue from episode one plays as he’s seen placing the classic magenta and purple helmet on in the final shot.
Premiering on March 20, the animated revival has been a smashing success among critics and fans alike. Labeled as one of Marvel’s “best projects ever,” the series has managed to embark on new, impactful stories while maintaining the nostalgic flair of the original show. For those that have not been watching, X-Men ’97 picks up where the 1990s narrative ended: the assassination of Professor Charles Xavier. With the X-Men leader and mutant activist gone, Cyclops and the team question their next steps in the fight for mutant civil rights. Just as public opinion begins to sway in their favor, a series of attacks, culminating in the horrific Genocide of Genosha, silence any hope that humans see mutants as equals. The latest episode, “Bright Eyes,” revealed the mastermind behind the devastating terrorist attack, setting up a monumental fight against time to salvage any future for mutant kind.
Watch the final three episodes of X-Men ’97 weekly on Wednesdays only on Disney Plus.
