Emmy Award winner Ewan McGregor (Halston) will lead and executive produce the upcoming drama series A Gentleman in Moscow, based on the bestselling novel of the same name from Amor Towles (You Have Arrived at Your Destination). The series will air on SHOWTIME in the United States and stream on Paramount+ in the U.K. and other available international markets, per a press release from SHOWTIME.
McGregor will play Count Alexander Rostov, a man whose past places him on the wrong side of history during the aftermath of the Russian Revolution. Although Count Rostov is spared execution, he is exiled to an attic room in the luxurious Hotel Metropol and threatened with death to never step outside again. During his time in the hotel, Count Rostov embarks on a journey of emotional discovery as he builds a new life and discovers the value of love, family, and friendship.
McGregor commented on his role via the SHOWTIME press release, stating, “It’s an amazing, wonderful story and I am very excited to get to play such a fabulous role.”
McGregor’s recent credits include Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jimmy Giannopoulos’s Birthday Cake, BBC’s Staged, Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey, and Mike Flanagan’s Doctor Sleep. In 2021, McGregor won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his work as the titular character in Netflix’s Halston.
A Gentleman in Moscow is written by Ben Vanstone (All Creatures Great and Small), who will also serve as showrunner and executive producer on the series. Towles is also set to executive produce alongside Tom Harper (Wild Rose) and Xavier Marchand (The Lodge).
Harper commented on the series announcement and casting news via the SHOWTIME press release. He shared, “The book is a rare and delicious treat and I fell in love with it the moment I picked it up 6 years ago. We are thrilled that Amor entrusted this brilliant team with bringing the Metropol to life and couldn’t be more delighted that Ewan will be playing the Count.”
A Gentleman in Moscow will begin production this year and debut on SHOWTIME in 2023.
