Euphoria actress Sydney Sweeney (The White Lotus, Immaculate) was reportedly “shocked” by the direction season three of the HBO teen drama will take its story, according to report from IndieWire’s Samantha Bergeson. While information on the continuation of the series, which concluded its second season in early 2022, Sweeney told viewers to expect the unexpected in an interview with Bustle.

“I can say that it’s going to be a wild ride,” Sweeney mused in response to a question from Bustle representative Jake Viswanath about what lies ahead for her Euphoria character, Cassandra “Cassie” Howard. “I was definitely very shocked by the turns of Cassie’s life. I’m very excited for the entire show.”

Season three of Euphoria was originally slated for release in 2025, but has suffered numerous obstacles to its production, including (but not limited to) the 2023 Hollywood labor strikes, creator Sam Levinson’s (The Idol, Malcolm and Marie) scheduling conflicts, and the tragic deaths of leading actor Angus Cloud (Your Lucky Day, The Garfield Movie) and executive producer Kevin Turen. To address the chronological gap between seasons, season three will reportedly feature time skip that allows Euphoria’s characters to grow beyond the high school setting that defined it in its initial run.

To Sweeney, though, filming her scenes has felt like something of a family reunion. “I’m so happy to be back,” she told Bustle. “It feels like I’m with my OG family. We’ve been doing this since I was 20 years old.” She was particularly delighted to reunite with Maude Apatow (This is 40, The King Of Staten Island), who plays Cassie’s younger sister Lexi on Euphoria. “I see her all the time, so being able to work together again is always so fulfilling. She’s just such a special, sweet, and kind person.”

Production for season three of Euphoria is currently underway, meaning audiences will have to wait a while longer to see where Cassie, Rue, and the rest of the cast have ended up in the five years since the events of season two. In the meantime, fans of Sweeney can look forward to her upcoming appearances in the films Eden and The Housemaid (also via Bustle) or relive the first two seasons of the teen drama streaming now on HBO Max.
