HBO has officially announced the premiere date for the third season of Sam Levinson’s (Assassination Nation, The Idol) Euphoria. The provocative coming-of-age tale of Gen Z life in Southern California returns on April 12. View the trailer below.
According to HBO, the official synopsis for season three reads: “A group of childhood friends wrestle with the virtue of faith, the possibility of redemption, and the problem of evil.” Originally set in the interconnected lives of high schoolers, Euphoria rightfully jumps forward a few years after graduation, finding Zendaya’s Rue Bennett and her gang trying to survive young adulthood.
Joining Zendaya in the main cast are Hunter Schafer (The Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes, Cuckoo), as Jules, Jacob Elordi (Frankenstein, Wuthering Heights) as Nate, Sydney Sweeney (The Housemaid, The White Lotus) as Cassie, Maude Apatow (This Is 40, Knocked Up) as Cassie’s sister, Lexi, and Alexa Demie (Waves, Mid90s) as Maddy. From the looks of the trailer, our lead, Rue, has settled into a cozy form of normalcy when a sin from the past returns to collect a debt. Elsewhere, Nate and Cassie are unhappily married, and Jules is living the life of luxury as a sugar baby.
Other returning stars include Colman Domingo (Lincoln, Selma), Eric Dane (Countdown, Grey’s Anatomy), Chole Cherry (Two Neighbors, Find Your Friends) and Martha Kelley (Marriage Story, Corporate Animals), who has been bumped up to a series regular. Supporting cast are Dominic Fike (Little Death, Presence), Nika King (Greenleaf, 65), Alanna Ubach (Bombshell, The Last Of Us), Sophia Rose Wilson (Euphoria), Melvin Bonez Estes (Fight To Be Me: The Dwen Curry Story), Daeg Faerch (Hancock, Halloween), Paula Marshall (Gary Unmarried, Californication), Zak Steiner (The Ghost Trap, White Men Can’t Jump), and Marsha Gambles.
Season three boasts an extensive cast of new faces, including Marshawn Lynch (Bottoms, The League), Rosalia, Kadeem Hardison (White Men Can’t Jump, A Different World), Akinnuoye-Agbaje. (The Union, Oz), Toby Wallace (Babyteeth, The Bikeriders), Natasha Lyonne (Poker Face, Fantastic Four), Sharon Stone (Law and Order: SVU, Basic Instinct), Asante Blackk (When They See Us, This Is Us), and Danielle Deadwyler (Atlanta, 40 Acres).
The third season experienced long delays. Following a tumultuous press run at the end of season two, which saw the departure of cast members Storm Reid (The Last of Us, A Wrinkle in Time) and Barbie Ferriera (Nope, Unpregnant), and the untimely death of Angus Cloud (North Hollywood, The Line), Levinson attempted to rewrite the third season, which was extended due to 2023’s dual union strike. Production for the third season finally began last February.
Domingo recently mentioned how this season felt more like a “cinema experience,” and for good reason. Levinson and cinmeagtroapher Marcell Rév (Malcolm & Marie, The Story of My Wife) partnered with Kodak to capture the series in both 35mm and 65mm. The latter displays the physical manifestation of our main characters’ transition from high school to the real world.
Based on the original Israeli series created by Ron Leshem (Allegiance, Turst No One) and Daphna Levin (The Truth, Miguel), Euphoria is created, written, directed and executive produced by Levinson. Additional EPs are Sara E. White (Forever, Get Shorty), Kevin Turen (Waves, All Is Lost), Ravi Nandan (Beef, Mo), Drake (Degrassi, Nothing Was the Same), Adel “Future” Nur (Top Boy, Dear Mama), Ashley Levinson (Those Who Wish Me Dead, Queen & Slim), Leshem, Levin, Hada Mozes Michtenstien (Scarred, Ziggy), Mirit Toovi (Colombian Love, Bad Boy), Yoram Mokady (Nevelot, Autonomies), Tmira Yardeni (Oboy, True Hero), and Gary Lennon (Hightown, Orange Is the New Black).
The eight-episode third season of Euphoria premieres on Sunday, April 12, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max. New episodes will debut weekly.
