According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney-owned channels have been unavailable to YouTube TV for some time. Disney and YouTube TV have come to a new agreement, and after almost two weeks, Disney’s channels will return to the streaming platform.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the co-chairmen of Disney Entertainment, Alan Bergman and Dana Walden, as well as ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro, came out with a statement. “This new agreement reflects our continued commitment to delivering exceptional entertainment and evolving with how audiences choose to watch,” they said. “It recognizes the tremendous value of Disney’s programming and provides YouTube TV subscribers with more flexibility and choice. We are pleased that our networks have been restored in time for fans to enjoy the many great programming options this weekend, including college football.”
A YouTube spokesperson also issued a statement. “We’re happy to share that we’ve reached an agreement with Disney that preserves the value of our service for our subscribers and future flexibility in our offers,” they reported. “Subscribers should see channels including ABC, ESPN, and FX returning to their service over the course of the day, as well as any recordings that were previously in their Library. We apologize for the disruption and appreciate our subscribers’ patience as we negotiated on their behalf.”, according to THR.
Disney’s channels include ABC, ESPN, Freeform, FX, and many others. These channels were removed from YouTube TV on October 30th, due to the two being unable to reach an agreement before the end of their contract. The length of the dispute garnered backlash and input from other entities, including the CEO of Sinclair Broadcasting Group. The blackout was also costly, as many viewers missed College Game Day and Monday Night Football games. Disney says this is the longest blackout in its recent recollection. Disney had found itself in a similar predicament in 2023 with Charter Communications, but that blackout lasted for a much shorter time, being 11 days according to THR.
mxdwn previously reported that YouTubeTV had a similar dispute with NBCUniversal in September. That carriage dispute was resolved with a temporary extension.
THR says the deal constitutes select live and library programming from ESPN Unlimited to be available with YouTube TV. The service will be available to YouTube TV subscribers for no extra cost.
