Erik Oleson Joins Amazon’s ‘Carnival Row’ As Showrunner Replacing Marc Guggenheim

Amazon’s neo-noir fantasy series, Carnival Row, makes big changes for the show’s second season. Erik Oleson (Daredevil, The Man in the High Castle) will be the series’ new executive producer and showrunner in the place of Marc Guggenheim, who was in charge of season one.

Guggenheim is busy executive producing The CW’s big Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover with the Arrow-verse and is working on developing various projects. While he won’t be involved with the show on a daily basis, he will still be consulting on the show.

The show starring Orlando Bloom (Pirates of the Carribean) and Cara Delevingne (Suicide Squad) is also losing series co-creator Travis Beacham. He wrote the 2005 Black List Script, which was the basis for the fantasy drama series. Beacham departs the show over creative differences that could not be resolved, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Even with their departure, Guggenheim and Beacham will retain executive producer credits.

Oleson takes on the role of showrunner for the series, after signing a massive overall deal with Amazon Studios in March.

“I want to tell the kind of stories that I love: stories that have great characters, thrilling concepts and epic backdrops, but are about something meaningful,” Olseon said about the deal. “Stories which allow an audience to think and feel rewarded for watching. Amazon is a perfect home for these stories, and I’m psyched to work alongside the entire Amazon Studios team.”

The show co-created by Rene Echevarria (The 4400), was renewed for season 2 a month before its season 1 debut. Carnival Row deals with issues of immigration and a series of murders through a fantasy-world scope. The series is currently in production for its second season in Prague, according to Deadline.

“We’re happy to welcome Erik back to Amazon Studios,” said Albert Cheng, Co-Head of Television, Amazon Studios. “Erik knows how to build worlds that enthrall viewers, but that are grounded with real emotion and relationships. We’re very excited he’ll be re-joining our incredible team of producers and creators here at Amazon.”
