Deadline has reported that the Television Academy has voted to move five categories from the primetime telecast to the Creative Arts Emmys, which are nearly a full week prior to the set date of September 14 for the main show on NBC. Meaning that, during the main telecast, there will be fewer awards handed out compared to previous years.
As listed by Deadline, the categories being traded around and their nominees are:
Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie – Beef’s Charles Melton (Riverdale, American Horror Story: Hotel), DTF St. Louis’ Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water, Step Brothers), Jason Bateman (Arrested Development, Ozark), and David Harbour (Stranger Things, The Equalizer), Death By Lightning’s Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation, The Last of Us), and Half Man’s Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer, Against The Law)
Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie – Beef’s Youn Yuh-jung (Dear My Friends, Minari), Monster’s Laurie Metcalf (The Conners, Roseanne), DTF St. Louis’ Linda Cardellini (Bloodline, Mad Men) and Joy Sunday (Wednesday, The Beta Test), All Her Fault’s Dakota Fanning (Man on Fire, Uptown Girls), and Love Story’s Constance Zimmer (Entourage, The Lincoln Lawyer).
Writing for a Variety Series – The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.
Writing for a Limited Series or Movie – Death By Lightning’s Mike Makowsky (Death by Lightning, Bad Education), Beef’s Lee Sung Jin (Mothman, Pipeline), DTF St. Louis’ Steven Conrad (Patriot, The Promotion), All Her Fault’s Megan Gallagher (Wolf, Grand Hotel), and The Beast In Me’s Daniel Pearle (American Crime Story, Accused) and Gabe Rotter (The X-Files, The Lone Gunmen).
Directing for a Limited Series or Movie – Black Rabbit’s Jason Bateman, Beef’s Lee Sung Jin and Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts*, Paper Towns), and DTF St. Louis’ Steven Conrad.
The move, according to Deadline, is likely to infuriate the SAG-AFTRA, WGA, and DGA guilds. After announcing the move, the Academy noted:
“The Television Academy is committed to delivering a fresh new take on the Emmys broadcast, with a focus on entertainment that celebrates television shows, artists, and moments audiences love while honoring excellent work from the past year. Given the extraordinary breadth of work recognized each year and the limited time available within a three-hour broadcast, a select number of categories will be moving to the Emmy ceremonies taking place the week prior to the telecast. This thoughtful evolution ensures this year’s NBC ceremony and future broadcasts remain deeply engaging and tailored to the television audience.”
