Rickard’s character, Felicity Smoak, was intended to be a one-off character during the first season. She went on to be a core member of Team Arrow and eventually the main love interest of Oliver Queen.
Rickards left the show at the end of its seventh season. Amell told Entertainment Weekly in July that he felt “not great” finishing the series without her. “I think Arrow as you know it effectively ended in 722. It’s a different show in season 8.”
During the CW’s upfront calls in May, the network’s president Mark Pedowitz hinted that the network would “love to have” her back. He went onto say, “Emily was terrific in the show and we believe that Beth Schwartz did a great job wrapping up the storyline last year. If Beth can find a way to bring her back that makes sense and Emily is available, we’d love to have her. Otherwise, I’m pleased with the way they said goodbye to the character.”
Marc Guggenheim, the consulting producer for Arrow, tweeted, “We couldn’t be happier or more thrilled. No other way to do our finale. You’ll find our about more old friends returning in the coming weeks…”
Rickard’s character left on a less dire note that most characters when written off. During the season seven finale, Felicity traveled to an unknown time and earth to be with Oliver Queen. Now fans are wondering if they’ll get to see where Felicity ended up at the end of the previous season finale.
The Arrow series finale will air on January 28, 2020.
