According to Comicbook, Secret Invasion star Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) states that you don’t have to personally be a Marvel fan to enjoy the upcoming series. Even though the franchise now consists of eight TV series and 32 feature films with many more on the way this year, it doesn’t mean that new-time viewers will have to go through the entire MCU franchise to enjoy Secret Invasion when it premieres this summer. According to Clarke, it will not be important to know a ton from the past MCU to be able to enjoy the upcoming series.
Clarke told Empire Magazine, “It’s definitely a show for the fans, but it’s also a show that my mum, who doesn’t watch Marvel, will watch and get, do you know what I mean? You can get into dangerous territory sometimes with this sort of genre where if you haven’t watched all 17 other films or shows, you’re not going to get it. This isn’t that at all.”
According to Comicbook, Secret Invasion is less tied to the MCU compared to others in the franchise. It will have a completely different tone compared to its predecessors. Don Cheadle (Avengers: End Game) recently explained in an interview with Entertainment Weekly how Secret Invasion is more like a 1970s spy film than a Marvel superhero movie.
He said, “It speaks to the elasticity of what the MCU can be. This one feels much closer to a movie like Bourne Identity or something that’s more along the tone of a ’70s movie. It’s not as much about the bells and whistles of big special effects. It’s more about the intrigue and drama, the espionage and double-crosses. And I still think it fits perfectly with what the MCU is able to do and pull off.”
Secret Invasion will premiere on Disney+ on June 21st.
