On Wednesday comedic genius Ellen DeGeneres playfully responded to a tweet by Netflix, asking her to do a Netflix stand-up special:
The confirmation comes as DeGeneres wraps up the 14th season of her daytime talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show on CBS. According to Deadline, there is no additional information on the deal with Netflix regarding the special, but like the two previous specials Ellen taped for HBO back in 2001 and 2003, Ellen DeGeneres: The Beginning and Ellen DeGeneres: Here and Now, the long-running stand-up comic is sure to tickle your ribs.
Netflix recently worked out an estimated $40 million deal with comedian Chris Rock to do a two-part special, and the internet network continues to expand their lineup of stand-up comedians. Comics include names like Iliza Shlesinger, Aziz Ansari, Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy, Chelsea Handler, Michael Che, Gabriel Iglesias, Bill Burr and Emmy-nominated shows by John Mulaney and Patton Oswalt.
“Increasingly, Netflix is becoming the preeminent destination for stand-up comedy, partnering with top-tier talent across a wide variety of styles and humor, enabling them to bring their fresh, distinctive and hilarious voices to our members in 190 countries around the world,” said Lisa Nishimura, Netflix’s VP of Original Documentary and Comedy.
While its been 15 years since DeGeneres, 59, has done a stand-up special, the comedian has been busy with her Emmy-winning daytime talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show, performing voice over in animated features like Finding Nemo (2004) and Finding Dory (2016), and hosting the Grammy’s and Academy award shows from time to time.
