According to Deadline, Irvin Cartagena has pleaded guilty to selling five-time Emmy nominee Michael K. Williams a fatal dose of fentanyl on September 5, 2021. Williams, 54, was a beloved actor best known for his role as Omar Little in The Wire and Chalky White in Boardwalk Empire. His final acting credit was the 2022 film Breaking, alongside John Boyega (Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, Attack The Block).
On Wednesday, from Deadline, Cartagena pleaded guilty to “one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute fentanyl analogue, fentanyl, and heroin.” Cartagena, who is also known by his nickname “Green Eyes,” will face a minimum of five years and a maximum of forty years in prison and will be sentenced later this year. U.S. District Judge Ronnie Abrams was the presiding judge.
U.S. Attorney Damian Williams from the Southern District of New York later said in a statement, “Irvin Cartagena sold fentanyl-laced heroin in broad daylight in New York City, feeding addiction and causing tragedy. In doing so, he dealt the fatal dose that killed Michael K. Williams.” The transaction occurred in the South Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn.
Williams’ body was found in his New York City apartment. At the time, he had just been nominated for the Outstanding Supporting Actor award at the Emmy’s following his role on HBO Max horror series Lovecraft Country. The NYC Office of Chief Medical Examiner ruled the cause of death as an accidental overdose on September 24. Via Deadline, Williams died from “acute intoxication by the combined effects of fentanyl, p-fluorofentanyl, heroin and cocaine.”
The NYPD and FBI arrested four men in February last year for their connection to the case. These men were seen selling Williams the drugs on tape from security cameras and via informants. Hector Robles, Luis Cruz, and Carlos Macci were picked up in New York while Cartagena was arrested in Puerto Rico. It was also revealed that the men continued to sell their product in the area despite Williams’ death.
Williams starred in over 100 projects during his career, which spanned almost thirty years. Some of his notable films are The Road, Snitch, The Gambler, The Land, The Purge: Anarchy, Assassin’s Creed, The Public, 12 Years A Slave, and Motherless Brooklyn. He had guest appearances on several television shows as well, such as Community, Alias, Law & Order, and When They See Us.
