Earlier this week, DreamWorks animation released a new trailer for its newest animated series titled Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts. The fantasy series is set to premiere on Netflix later this January.
A recent report from Collider notes that Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts is a show that is distinct from other children’s animated series currently on air. “There have been quite a few ‘human girl travels into wild and whimsical fantasy world’ series of late… but DreamWorksTV’s new Netflix series Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts looks to be the most insane of the bunch.” The series, created by Radford Sechrist of How to Train Your Dragon 2, takes place in a post-apocalyptic world full of dangerous and beautiful creatures. The recent trailer features axe-wielding cats, a bunny-giant, and guitar-playing snakes, just to name a few of the crazy creatures on the show.
The story follows a human girl named Kipo, played by Karen Fukuhara, as she explores the “Surface World” after spending her whole life living underground. Kipo meets other surface dwellers and a myriad of new and weird creatures, some of whom want to track her back to her home and bring harm to her human community. Over the course of the series, Kipo and her new friends will try to find a way for her to get back home.
In addition to Fukuhara, the series features the voices of Sydney Mikayla as Wolf, a tough surface-dweller, Coy Stewart as the cheerful Benson, Deon Cole as a talking insect named Dave, and Dee Bradley Baker as a cute pig named Mandu. Kipo will also feature a few prominent guest stars, including Sterling K. Brown (Frozen 2) as Kipo’s father Lio, Dan Stevens (Legion) as the villainous Scarlemagne, Lea Delaria (Orange is the New Black) as a cat named Molly Yarnchopper, Joan Jett as rocker snake named Camille, and John Hodgman and GZA (Wu Tang Clan) as two turtleneck-wearing wolves.
Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts has been confirmed by DreamWorks for 10 half-hour episodes. The series is set to premiere on January 14th. You can watch the trailer for the series below.
