Donald Glover’s ‘Mr & Mrs Smith’ Adaptation Delayed to 2024

Along with many anticipated TV series, the new adaptation of Mr. & Mrs. Smith has been pushed into 2024. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the reimagination of the popular movie Mr. & Mrs. Smith has been delayed. The series, starring Donald Glover (Community, Atlanta) and Maya Erskine (PEN15) as the title roles, stopped its production due to the prolonged Hollywood strikes that have yet to come to an end.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith is a series based off of the 2005 movie of the same title. It was originally starring Angelina Jolie (Girl, Interrupted) and Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) as the title roles with the plot circling a married couple of secret agents who find out their agencies have assigned them to kill each other.

The official description of the newly reimagined series reads “Meet the Smiths: Two strangers, John and Jane, who have given up their identities to be thrown together as partners — in espionage and in marriage. Matched by a mysterious agency, each episode follows them on a new mission and new milestone in their relationship. When the cracks begin to show through, they must fight to stay together. Because in this marriage, divorce is not an option.”

Amazon released the trailer for the adaptation as a part of an upcoming show sneak peek on Prime Day.

The series is set to star Glover and Erskine in the title roles with Glover executive producing the show along with Francesca Sloane. The original air date was set to be in November of 2023 but now has been pushed off into 2024 due to the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strike. Glover was one of a handful of studio producers who had their deals with Amazon suspended amid the strikes. It was explained by a studio chief that “If you were in active post or production on something and willing to work [in a non-writing capacity], we’d keep paying you. If you didn’t have anything or didn’t want to work, we stopped.”

Mr. & Mrs. Smith has been in the works since 2021 and will now be released in 2024 on Amazon Prime.
