The production on season 13 of BBC’s Doctor Who starts off with a bang with the series welcoming back John Barrowman (Arrow, Malcolm Merlyn) as Captain Jack Harkness for its Christmas Special. Captain Jack Harkness was a con man from the 51st century and throughout the show viewers uncovered that he possesses the unique gift of immortality. Harkness has been killed on the show several times before, only to come back resurrected. Barrowman’s most recent appearance took place in the season 12 episode, “Fugitive of the Judoon,” in which the actor “made a brief surprise appearance with a stark warning for Yaz, Ryan, and Graham to pass on to the Doctor before disappearing,” according to Deadline.
Viewers can be sure that Harkness will play a major role in helping The Doctor escape from an intergalactic prison. “Captain Jack will be on hand to help the family as they discover a disturbing plan forming involving one of the Doctor’s most feared and dangerous enemies, the Daleks. With the Thirteenth Doctor, played by Jodie Whittaker (Beth Latimer, Broadchurch), locked away in a space prison, will Captain Jack be able to help save Planet Earth?” As stated by Deadline.
Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 there were some unexpected setbacks for the production of Dr. Who and we won’t be seeing season 13 until 2021. However, fans still have the Christmas special to look forward to in the meantime. Barrowman himself had a few words to say about reprising his role, “Putting on Jack’s coat and setting foot back on the set of Doctor Who was just like going back home. It’s always thrilling to play Captain Jack. He’s a character very close to my heart who changed my life, and to know the fans love him as much as I do makes his return even sweeter. I hope everyone enjoys Jack’s heroic adventure with Thirteen,” Barrowman stated in an article by Deadline. His excitement and love of the character should be sufficient evidence to the fans that his next appearance will be one to remember.
