For the 2026 Emmy Awards, the Muppet Show special that premiered back on February 4th has received four awards after the first two ceremonies from the past weekend. From Deadline, the series is one of the top awarded series to be nominated for September 14th.
The special was made as a multi-platform viewership with all the beloved Muppets characters we’ve known and loved with their special guest stars, Sabrina Carpenter (Espresso, Manchild) and Maya Rudolph (Loot, The Good Place). Under the productions of Executive producer Seth Rogen (Pineapple Express, The Studio) and Evan Goldberg’s Point Grey Pictures, 2oth Television, and Muppets Studio, it showcases similar aspects from the original Muppet Show’s (1976-1981), such as comedy skits, celebrity guests, and nostalgic musical numbers.
The special aired for eight days on ABC and was the most viewed on Disney+, with about 8 million people who watched it. The new show received high praises from the audience as they not only celebrated the Muppet Show’s 50th-anniversary, but the possible return of a classic Disney show. It also has made Grammy winner Carpenter get halfway towards having EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony).
However, there hasn’t been any more episodes or specials released in the past seven months since then. Kermit even joked about the new television series being setup, saying, “It’s the return of The Muppet Show back on the very stage where it all started, and then ended, and is maybe starting again, depending on how tonight goes.”
After premiering the special, Deadline has found sources that don’t indicate any conversations on the show continuing currently. It makes viewers question how production can successfully achieve a full-length Muppets series to bring back the beloved characters and the whimsical charm it has. The Emmy wins might kick start getting things started for the rest of the series, but it is not in the works yet.
