After announcing plans for an ad tier of its streaming service earlier this year, Disney launched the ad-supported version of Disney+ yesterday, according to a Disney press release. Titled Disney+ Basic, the new service tier is available to new and current Disney+ subscribers and includes offerings for the company’s bundled streaming options.
According to the press release, the ad version will include many of the same features included in the top-tier premium version of the streaming service. Users of the basic tier can access the same extensive library of original and cataloged titles; be able to add up to seven profiles per account with parental controls; stream across up to four devices; and, utilize specialty playback features such as 4K Ultra HD, HDR 10, Dolby Vision, and IMAX enhanced aspect ratio where supported. Features such as Downloads, SharePlay or GroupWatch, and Dolby Atmos will not be available at the time of launch.
“Today’s launch marks a milestone moment for Disney+ and puts consumer choice at the forefront,” Michael Paull, President, Direct to Consumer, stated in the press release. “With these new ad-supported offerings, we’re able to deliver greater flexibility for consumers to enjoy the full breadth and depth of incredible storytelling from The Walt Disney Company.”
The price for the Basic tier is set at $7.99 a month. Per the press release, three other tiers incorporate Disney’s service bundles which include either Hulu, ESPN+, or Hulu + Live TV all with ads: the Bundle Duo Basic pairs Disney+ and Hulu with ads for $9.99; Bundle Trio adds ESPN+ with ads at $12.99; and, for $69.99 per month, subscribers can utilize Hulu with ads + Live TV which includes all four services.
President of Disney Advertising, Rita Ferro stated, “Today we welcome Disney+ with ads to the largest, most diverse, and impactful portfolio in the industry. We are committed to connecting our clients to the best storytelling in the world while delivering innovation and viewer-first experiences in streaming now and in the future.”
Disney+ joins the ranks of HBO Max, Amazon Prime’s Freevee, and Netflix as major streamers to offer an ad-supported version. Apple TV+ currently remains the lone streamer with one service offering uninterrupted content.
