According to Variety, teaser for the upcoming action-comedy series American Born Chinese has been released. The series boasts an incredible cast, featuring Michelle Yeoh (Crazy Rich Asians, The Witcher: Blood Origin) and Ke Huy Quan (The Goonies, Loki), who won this year’s Academy Awards for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor, respectively.
American Born Chinese hails from director Destin Daniel Cretton (Short Term 12, Just Mercy), best known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The Disney+ series is adapted from a 2006 graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang (Boxers & Saints, Secret Coders) and “follows Jin Wang, an average teenager juggling his high-school social life with his immigrant home life,” via IMDB, “When he meets a new foreign student at school, even more worlds collide in his life.”
Jin is portrayed by newcomer Ben Wang (Chang Can Dunk), who recently spoke in an interview with POC Culture about what it was like to work with the cast.
Additionally, he said, “It was deeply surreal and really useful as an actor. You can be successful and famous and a kind, generous, down-to-earth person… For me, who’s just starting out on all this, that is something I want to keep in perspective as I continue in my career.”
The cast includes Ronny Chieng (Crazy Rich Asians, M3GAN), Jimmy O. Yang (Patriots Day, Love Hard), Chin Han (The Dark Knight, Marco Polo), Daniel Wu (Into the Badlands, Westworld), Sydney Taylor (Just Add Magic: Mystery City, Splitting Up Together), and Poppy Liu (Hacks, Sunnyside), among others. Fellow Everything Everywhere All At Once costars Stephanie Hsu (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Path) and James Hong (Big Trouble in Little China, Kung Fu Panda) will also appear in the series.
American Born Chinese will debut on May 24, exclusively on Disney+.
