Disney+ Original Series ‘Willow’ Based on 80s Fantasy Film Reveals First Teaser Trailer

A story last explored in the 1980s is returning for an all-new original series at Disney+. Lucasfilm and Imagine Entertainment revealed the teaser trailer for the fantasy series, Willowduring a presentation at today’s Star Wars Celebration, via a Disney+ press release. Based on the 1988 feature film of the same name, the new series is set to arrive exclusively on Disney+ on November 30, 2022. View the teaser below.

The series follows a diverse group in a fantastical world trek together to battle a new threat beyond their borders. The cast includes Erin Keyllyman as Jade (Falcone and the Winter Soldier, The Last Jedi), Ruby Cruz (Castle Rock, Mare of Easttown) as Kit, and Ellie Bamber (Nocturnal Animals, The Serpent) as Dove. Dempsey Bryk (Coroner, Far Cry 6) and Tony Revolori (Spider-Man: No Way Home, DOPE) will also star alongside Warwick Davis (Ray, Star Wars: The Force Awakens), who will reprise his film role as sorcerer Willow Ufgood.

Directed by Ron Howard (Happy Days, A Beautiful Mind) and produced by George Lucas (Star Wars: A New Hope, Star Wars: The Clone Wars), the original movie followed Davis’ Ufgood as an unlikely hero awarded the task to vanquish a rising evil and protect an infant princess destined to unite the realms. The movie co-starred Val Kilmer (Batman Forever, Top Gun), Joanner Whalley (Scandal, Kill Me Again), Kevin Pollack (A Few Good Men, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), and twin sisters, Ruth and Kate Greenfield. The story was penned by Lucas and Bob Dolman (Far and Away, WKRP in Cincinnati).

According to the press release, the series has Howard returning as an executive producer along with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy (Indiana Jones 5, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), Michelle Rejwan (Monster Challenge), Wendy Mericle (Arrow, Desperate Housewives), and Jonathan Kasdan (In the Land of Women, Star Wars: A Solo Story). Jon Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights) was originally set to direct and executive produce, but he withdrew from the project after COVID pushbacks interfered with his schedule.

In addition to this announcement, the presentation blessed fans with the first trailer for Disney+’s Andor series and a teaser image of Harrison Ford (Air Force One, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) in next summer’s Indiana Jones 5.
