Following the climactic ending to last week’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Disney+ released a new promo trailer. According to the Disney+ press release, the new video reviews the events that led to the devastating conclusion of episode four, “The Whole World is Watching.” It also previews what we can expect from the series’ final two episodes. Check the trailer out below:
*SPOILERS FOR EPISODE FOUR BELOW*
The sneak peek harkens back to dialogue from the very first trailer, showcasing a new adventure for Anthony Mackie’s (The Hate U Give, She Hate Me) Sam Wilson and Sebastian Stan’s (I, Tonya, Captain America: Winter Soldier) Bucky Barnes; the Falcon and Winter Soldier, respectively. Bucky, the beloved friend of Steve Rogers, questions how Sam could so easily give up the shield, defying Steve’s wishes. Sam, in his defense, describes the shield’s “complicated legacy” alluding to his own insecurity of inheriting the mantle not just as a man, but a Black man in America. Sam’s act of good faith was in vain as the government placed the shield in the hands of a new Captain America, Wyatt Russell’s (Lodge 49, DEVS) John Walker.
This new Cap would only complicate Sam and Buckey’s mission to bring down a growing threat to national security – the Flag Smashers. Led by a young woman, Erin Kellyman’s (Solo: A Star Wars Story, Don’t Forget the Driver) Karli Morgenthau, the group’s philosophy envisioned a pre-blip world where the powers that be didn’t hold resources and aid hostage from displaced communities across the globe. Her vision – an earnest one to achieve – gets clouded when the group steals the super-serum for themselves. And acts of violence become their method of choice.
These different perspectives begin to disillusion the lines between hero and villain, which freed convict Baron Zemo, played by Daniel Brühl (Rush, The Alienist), sees no difference. The wealthy terrorist becomes a sound voice of reason while eliminating remnants of the super-serum and being master of rhythm on the dancefloor. Ultimately, the fight over who is right results in a great loss for Walker, who in a fit of rage murders an unarmed Flag Smasher in front of an awe-struck crowd of recording cellphones. Now with literal blood on the shield, Sam and Bucky are left with no choice but to handle Walker themselves.
The final two episodes of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will premiere consecutively Friday, April 16, and 23 only on Disney+.
